The Strangers Movie makes afraid of something that simply cannot escape doing each and every night.
The last 10 years of horror films have been sufficiently entertaining. However, there’s been a growing boundary between the horrific and the terrifying, between that which is gruesome or disturbing and that which is legitimately scary. But The Strangers will remind what the term “terrifying” truly means.
Scott Speedman as James Hoyt and Liv Tyler as Kristen McKay, Two lovers are having the crisis in their relationship, are forced to spend the evening in an isolated, country home after returning from a nearby wedding. Here, three masked psychotics’ strangers enter who taunt and stalk the couple through the terrifying until dawn hours.
A horror film of a Writer and director Bryan Bertino’s perfectly-timed at a sparse 90 minutes – does a number of things absolutely right. Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler both give honest, believable performances. It does have some flaws and the craftsmanship of the film covers those flaws.
It certainly feels new in its delivery of legitimate, heart-pounding scares, though The Strangers is certainly nothing new to the genre. Moreover, for a film called The Strangers, the idea is incredibly familiar, but it’s in the execution where the film succeeds.
